Brian Sugar

Founder & Managing Partner

Brian is an entrepreneur and investor, with a wealth of experience in the commerce, technology, and media industries. He is the Founder of Sugar Capital, a venture capital firm focused on early-stage investments in the future of commerce.

Prior to starting Sugar Capital, Brian held a number of executive positions in the media industry, including serving as President and Director at Group Nine Media, which acquired POPSUGAR in 2019 and was later acquired by Vox Media in 2022. ShopStyle, a wholly-owned subsidiary of POPSUGAR, was acquired by Rakuten in 2017. Brian co-founded POPSUGAR with his wife Lisa in 2006. POPSUGAR is a global media and commerce company that merged with Group Nine Media in 2019. He also founded Sugar Media, an IPTV technology company that was acquired by 2Wire in 2003 and then by AT&T in 2006.

Brian has a long history of success in the ecommerce space, having previously served as Chief Web Officer of Kmart's Bluelight.com, a joint venture between Kmart, Martha Stewart, and Yahoo!, and as VP of eCommerce at J.Crew. He got his start in the internet industry by dropping out of George Washington University to start Neptune, a Washington D.C.-based ISP in 1995.

In addition to his track record as an entrepreneur, Brian is also an investor and advisor, having worked with many successful companies, including Afterpay (acquired by Square), Everlane, Leap Retail, Olive & June, Optimizely (acquired by Episerver), Roadster (acquired by CDK), and True Botanicals.

Currently, Brian serves on the boards of Disco Networks, Everlane, and Novel Commerce. He lives in San Francisco with his wife Lisa, their three daughters, and two energetic terriers.
